Anneliese MacPhail Talks To WABE After Troy Davis Execution
By Rose Scott
Atlanta, GA – After 20 years on death row and scheduled to die 3 times Troy Davis was executed by lethal injection late Wednesday night. Davis was convicted in 1991 for the murder of off duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail.
MacPhail's mother Anneliese did not attend the execution. WABE's Rose Scott reports the 77-year old great grandmother says she now has some comfort.
It's less than 12 hours after Troy Davis has been executed for killing her son Mark:
"well, I'm kind of numb still"
Anneliese MacPhail says she needs to catch up on some sleep and get a little rest. The 77-year old MacPhail responds to the question about feeling different on this day than in the last two decades:
"well, different the only thing I kind of felt was you know did it really happen is it really over yet"
The last minute appeal to the U.S Supreme Court delayed the execution for nearly four hours. A national news network had set up a camera inside her Columbus, Georgia home. Outside other media outlets waited for her to emerge.
Mrs. MacPhail is used to cameras. She's now hoping for some privacy:
"well, I sure hope so because I need it, we have been through 22 years of hell back and forth and so I really need to get some rest"
There will be no more legal proceedings for Anneliese MacPhail to attend regarding Troy Davis. Despite seven witnesses recanting or changing their testimony about the case, MacPhail holds on to her belief that no one else is responsible for her son's murder:
"uh uh no, I tell you after we went through the original trial and we went through it I was convinced"
Anneliese MacPhail has said she often talks to pictures of her son.
WABE: When you woke this morning I assuming you looked at his picture, what did you say?
MacPhail:What I said to Mark's picture?
WABE: Yes maam.
MacPhail:I said honey we will have some peace right now, it's over.
