"An Appeal for Human Rights:" This Day in History, 1960

Atlanta, GA – If we were to turn Atlanta's clock back 49 years--to this day in 1960--we'd find an interesting, even revolutionary article in the local newspaper. Earlier in the year student demonstrations against segregation that began at a lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina had spread throughout the South. Inspired by the protests, students at the Atlanta University Center crafted an "Appeal for Human Rights", which was then published in several newspapers. Georgia State University historian Cliff Kuhn explains that that document came on the heels of another appeal.
