APS Board Chair Lays Out Stragety For Finding New Superintendent

Atlanta, GA –
This week the Atlanta Board of Education was given a "how to" presentation to find the district's next superintendent. Dr. Beverly Hall will not be back when her contract is up in June of 2011. As WABE's Rose Scott reports, the board's chair says the search will be aggressive yet thorough.

Of the current nine members of the board, only one has been thru the process of searching and hiring a superintendent.
That was 11 years ago. Current chair Khaatim El says he wants the search process to first be transparent and then he says, "appoint a new superintendent search committee of the board that will develop a broad overview of how we're going to succeed with succession planning".

While several names have already been mentioned. El says the search will include input from the public. "We're going to name two co-chairs to lead a citizen group before the end of this year so, we're going move quite aggressively", according to El.

The transition process goes beyond bringing in a new superintendent.
The board EL says will work with Dr. Hall during the changeover period.
He adds it will also be important to have support from civic groups.
