Atlanta-based CARE helps Haiti

Atlanta, GA – A local humanitarian organization is the leading the Atlanta area's effort to help Haiti stabilize and recover from this week's earthquake.

WABE's Charles Edwards reports

Helping Haiti after disasters is nothing new to CARE. The group set up an office in Port-au-Prince after Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

After this week's earthquake, CARE began sending food, hygiene kits and water purification tablets among other necessary items.

The huge demand is stressing resources in CARE's warehouse. Plus, its President and CEO Helene Gayle estimates they'll need 10 million dollars.

GAYLE: "And that's not just in this immediate phase but we recognize that in these situations it's not only important to act now quickly but to also make sure that we're thinking about the longer term rebuilding of societies."

That's why the group has established the website atlantacares.org. There, CARE is accepting financial donations.

Meanwhile, UPS has donated cash and other assistance. Delta Airlines is helping CARE staff get to Haiti.
