Christian Coalition Works to Block Sunday Alcohol Legislation

Atlanta, GA – Georgia's Christian Coalition says it's getting closer to blocking a Senate bill that would allow local referendums for Sunday Alcohol sales.

The Sunday sales bill recently passed out of a Senate committee but has yet to make its way to the Senate floor. In the meantime, The Georgia Christian Coalition says it believes that 22 senators are planning to vote against the legislation if it comes up for a vote. Coalition president Jerry Luquire says the organization only needs seven more Senators to kill the bill.

"We're suggesting that our supporters tell their city councilman or commissioner to call their state senator and say alcohol is an issue that divides us. Just leave Sunday alone."

But Supporters of the bill say local jurisdictions have the right to vote on whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales. Governor Nathan Deal says he would sign a Sunday sales bill if the final version of the legislation allows for local referendums. A similar bill has also passed out of a House committee.
