Cobb flood shelter to close Thursday
By Charles Edwards
Atlanta, GA – The last of 7 Red Cross shelters for Metro Atlanta flood victims closes tomorrow morning.
And some worry about the future of those affected.
WABE's Charles Edwards reports
The Cobb County Civic Center became a Red Cross shelter 2 weeks ago. Before the flood, the center had scheduled a Martial Arts Tournament for this Saturday. Sherry Nickolson is a Red Cross spokeswoman.
NICKOLSON: "We've worked closely with them. They've been a great government partner and shared their space. But they also need to move on with other commitments they have and the timing is right right now for really most people to be taking that next step."
At its peak, the shelter housed about 300 flood victims. Earlier today, Nicholson estimated 100 people were still there. Many are getting help from the Red Cross and from Hosea Feed The Hungry. Afemo Omilami co-directs the aid group.
OMILANI: "If we don't intervene, we're going to have people homeless and full of anger and frustration in the street and that simply can not happen."
Tomorrow, a third of the remaining victims will go to a Red Cross transition shelter.
