Commission to vote on virtual charter school spending
By Michelle Wirth
Atlanta, GA – A state commission could boost the amount that's spent on virtual charter school students today.
The Georgia Charter school commission will vote on a recommendation to spend about $5800 dollars per year for each student who takes classes online.
That's about $2400 dollars more than they're currently receiving.
Mark Peevy is the executive director of the commission.
"What the commission wants to be able to do is to have a new funding level in place that will allow for the creation of new virtual schools, but also for a competitive market amongst virtual schools."
Peevy says commission members came up with the recommendation after studying the amounts that a number of other states are spending on virtual students.
Cyber school supporters say the proposed increase would improve the quality of education for the state's six thousand cyber school students.
However, they say the State should consider funding virtual students at an even higher level than what's currently on the table.
