Corps says Lanier's level is a cause for concern
By Shomial Ahmad
Atlanta, GA – Back around this time in 2007, the year of the historic drought, Lake Lanier's level was around 1,060 feet.
By mid-October the Army Corps projects that the lake level will be down to that point again.
Corps Spokesperson Lisa Coghlan says Lanier's level is already at a point for concern.
"We've been watching it closely for weeks, and unfortunately we haven't had those rain events that we typically do this time of year. As you well know, one tropical storm or hurricane event can change the drought conditions within the basin very quickly."
Coghlan says the lake level is currently around the bottom of Zone 3. That means navigation is severely limited, and hydropower generation is at a reduced level.
