CRB Report On Johnston Shooting
By Charles Edwards
Atlanta, GA – A lack of enforcement of police personnel policies led to the death of a 92 year old Atlanta woman in 2006. That's according to a report released today by the executive director of a police oversight group. The report for the Atlanta Citizens Review Board focuses on events leading up to city police officers illegally raiding Kathryn Johnston's home and fatally shooting her.
In short, Board executive director Christina Beamud says the Atlanta Police Department needs tighter internal supervision.
"You have to be vigilant with the smaller rules in order to avoid the misconduct that led up to the death on Mrs. Johnston," said Beamud.
Specifically, Beamud says they need to enforce rules on officers working extra jobs. After reviewing a federal investigation, she says officers admitted they were working extra jobs while on the clock with the city. Beamud argues such behavior breeds misconduct.
The Board will review the report next month.
