Emory Among Top Contributor to Drug Discoveries
By Jim Burress
Atlanta, GA – Out of all federally-funded research institutions, including universities, hospitals and research labs, Emory ranks fourth for discovery of new pharmaceuticals and vaccines, a New England Journal of Medicine report finds.
"94% of HIV-infected individuals in the US that are on life saving therapy take a drug developed at Emory," said Todd Sherer, Director of Technology Transfer at Emory. (Technology Transfer is the arm that takes a discovery from the lab to market.) He said royalties are relatively small compared to industry revenue. But the money makes a difference.
"It comes back and it subsidizes research and education."
The top contributors are the National Institutes of Health, the University of California System, and New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospitals.
