Emory professor discusses possible "consumption tax" for Georgia
By Denis O'Hayer
Atlanta, GA – The head of a special commission looking at an overhaul of the state's tax system floated some recommendations at a meeting of state lawmakers in Athens.
A.D. Frazier said the state should shift more of its revenue stream to a consumption tax meaning you'd pay sales taxes on more services than you do now. At the same time, Frazier recommended lowering income tax rates.
The commission's final report is due in January. WABE's Denis O'Hayer talked with Emory University Political Science Professor Alan Abramowitz about the political and economic effects of consumption taxes.
