EPA Gives BeltLine $1M for Cleanup
By Jim Burress
Atlanta, GA – The toxic areas known as brownfields include land along the BeltLine and other redevelopment corridors.
In all, the Environmental Protection Agency is providing Atlanta with a million dollars in grant money for the cleanup.
EPA head Lisa Jackson says because the city is prepared to redevelop the land, that million dollars will go a long way.
"People think of Superfund sites as these big things, but in this case a lot of times in urban areas, they're relatively small sites. But there's no responsible entity who can step forward and just clear this backlog."
Jackson praises the BeltLine project for taking that responsibility and spurring redevelopment.
Even so, more than 100 brownfields along the BeltLine corridor are still in need of cleanup.
