To get or not to get flood insurance
By Charles Edwards
Atlanta, GA – As rebounding from last month's flood continues, homeowners not affected by the rising waters are considering flood insurance.
WABE's Charles Edwards reports
Since the flood, the number of people calling home insurance companies about flood coverage has gone up.
Typically, mortgage companies require flood insurance for homeowners in flood plains. However, David Colmans, executive director of the Georgia Insurance Information Service, says everyone can and should get flood insurance.
COLMANS: "If it rains where you live, technically you could get a flood around there and we have seen this happen time and time again over the years where people don't have flood insurance because it's not required but that doesn't mean it's not necessary."
Flood insurance covers damage done to the home's structure and contents inside the home. Colmans recommends asking insurance agents to determine coverage amounts for structural damage. He also urges people to add up the costs of all the items in their home.
