GM Opens Bids for Doraville Plant Makeover
By Odette Yousef
Atlanta, GA – General Motors has started taking bids from developers who want to buy and re-purpose their plant in Doraville. The plant will close in late September.
Developers may submit their offers for the planned mixed-use development through mid-July. GM hopes to select one in the fall.
DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones says he believes the car company will do what's best for the Doraville community:
JONES: When this product is finally finished, and done and the doors are open, you're gonna see something that's much more dynamic than Atlantic Station.
Fred Zehnder, with GM, says the company is working closely with the city and county to align their visions:
ZEHNDER: The last thing we want to do is just sell, and run. That's not our objective here. We're obviously concerned with getting highest price attainable, but we're equally as concerned leaving a positive image when we leave the community.
The plant sits on 165-acres on I-285, between Buford Highway and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. About 1500 people who still work there will lose their jobs.
