H1N1 Activity Up in Georgia, Report Confirms Vaccine's Safety
By Jim Burress
Atlanta, GA – The CDC says regions of Georgia are among the hardest hit in the nation by a recent uptick in influenza cases, and almost all are H1N1. Locally, hospitalizations for H1N1 are on the increase, especially in adults.
Dr. Patrice Harris, Director of Health Services for Fulton County, says people aren't getting vaccinated for any number of reasons. "People worry about safety issues," said Harris. "People see a decrease in the spread in flu, and they begin to worry less. But this vaccine has proven to be safe, and it is the best way to protect oneself from the flu," she said.
A new report confirms the vaccine's safety, quelling some fears it might cause a rare, neurologic disease. The CDC reports a rate averaging 3.5 illnesses per 10-million vaccines given.
