I-85 Toll Lanes to Open October 1

New signs on I-85 will warn drivers about upcoming toll lanes

Atlanta – The long-awaited toll lanes on I-85 in Dekalb and Gwinnett counties are scheduled to open October first. The project will stretch for sixteen miles between Chamblee Tucker and Old Peachtree Roads. WABE's Martha Dalton has more.

Toll rates on the corridor will very depending on trip length and traffic congestion. Department of Transportation spokesperson Terry Pope says there will be signs to help:
"There is a rate sign prior to each access point, so folks can know what the charge will be for them, since the charge does change up and down with congestion."
The State Road and Tollway Authority estimates an average trip will cost less than five dollars one way. But SRTA spokesperson Malika Wilkins says you need a Peach Pass to use the lanes.
"There is technology in the lanes that will detect if a vehicle has entered that lane without a transponder in their vehicle."
Wilkins says violators will face fines up to 150 dollars.
