It's the Season for Smog

Atlanta, GA – Smog happens when car exhaust and industrial and other emissions mix with heat. That forms a toxic haze that hangs over the city.

More than unsightly, it's unhealthful. Smog burns the lungs similar to how sun burns the skin.

Kevin Green of the Clean Air Campaign says smog peaks on summer days between 2- and 7-PM. He adds individuals can make a big difference.

"Many people don't realize it, but half of smog forming emissions are coming from tailpipes of cars, so it's a great time to think about alternatives to driving alone."

Smog season starts on the heels of an American Lung Association report card released this week that gives Atlanta an "F" for its air quality. Atlanta had 63 heightened ozone days last year.
