Peachtree City Raises Awareness About 'Drinking and Driving' in Golf Carts
By Michelle Wirth
Atlanta, GA – Peachtree City Police want more to be aware about the dangers of drinking and driving in golf carts.
In the past fifteen months, Peachtree City Police have made 257 DUI arrests. 17 of those have been golf cart drivers who were under the influence. Lieutenant Mark Brown says while that's not a huge percentage of golf cart DUIs police are especially concerned. He says it's because the city has more than 90-miles of paths that are used by golf carts and pedestrians.
"There's a big misconception that golf carts are kind of toys. People need to realize especially in Peachtree City, with are more than 11,000 golf carts, that they are vehicles and the same laws apply to them as to cars, with certain exceptions for seat belts and those kind of things."
Golf Cart DUIs are something more Georgia communities may be faced with in the future. A state law that goes into effect in January will permit some types of golf carts on public streets, where local jurisdictions allow.
