The Postal Service May Close 252 Mail Processing Facilities Including 12 in Georgia
By Marjorie Coley
Atlanta, Ga. – The US Postal Service is considering a plan that would close 252 mail processing facilities around the country. As Marjorie Coley reports, about a dozen of those facilities are right here in Georgia.
The only two mail processing facilities on the list in the Metro Atlanta area are located in Acworth and Marietta.
Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood says he doesn't think the closing wouldn't impact the city much.
"I would think that it probably won't have a big impact on us. Probably, a lot of those jobs are jobs that are people coming from other parts of the county and I just don't think it's going to have that big an impact on our economy and on us. It'll have a big impact on the folks that are working there,"said Mayor Allegood.
Mayor Allegood says if the post office in Acworth closed, it would have a major impact on the 140,000 people it serves. He says the only post office in Acworth handles mail for 4 zip codes.
The Postal Service is looking at consolidating operations as part of its plan to cut costs. Postal officials say it's too soon to say how many jobs will be affected.
