Red Cross: Flood Homeless Holding On

Atlanta, Ga. – Red Cross officials say about 200 people who lost their homes, and some, everything they owned, are sleeping on cots in the cavernous hall.

Lisa Matheson, one of about ten Red Cross volunteers helping at the shelter, said, "One of the fabulous things in the shelter community is that they have been working together to establish a sense of normalcy. And when the Cobb County school system opened, they made arrangements so that the kids could go back to school, which was a great head start back on the road to recovery for them."

Volunteer psychological health professionals are also offering emotional support to those traumatized by their losses.

Corporate, non-profit and faith-based groups are pouring in donations totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct aid, including food, water, clothing and other basic needs.
