Shape-Note Singing

Shape-note singing, sometimes called 'Sacred Harp' is a system where songs are sung using shaped notes. It was devised around 1800 to help singers recognize the positions on a musical scale. The Sacred Harp, which was first published in 1844, was the most popular of the four-shape tunebooks.

You can learn more about shape-note singing at the New Georgia Encyclopedia+, the FASOLA web site and at the Atlanta Sacred Harp web site
